Sprinkle baking soda onto your entire carpet. Baking soda, with its active ingredient, sodium bicarbonate, acts as powerful natural deodorizer, and will leave your carpet smelling fresh. For really strong cat odors, you might try alternative baking soda product sold in pet supply stores. Look for pet deodorizers that contain baking soda as active ingredient. You can typically find them sold in tall cans.


Clean up all pet messes immediately. If your cat has accident on your carpet, blot or scoop it up immediately -- never rub stain because it will set into carpet -- and remove remaining stain by blotting it with soft cloth, soaked in white vinegar. Rinse with water-dampened cloth and dry by placing towel over wet spot and then placing heavy object onto towel for couple of hours.


Apply additional baking soda or pet deodorizer to your carpet after cleaning up any pet messes. This will take care of any lingering odors, however subtle.
